Sheeting & Slitting

During the process of custom seal and gasket fabrication, A.J. Rubber & Sponge Ltd. utilizes several processes including sheeting and slitting, where large rolls of sheet material are cut using extremely sharp rotary blades on flatbed presses. The forms of sheet material can include foam, rubber, polyethylene foam, solid rubber, sponge, silicone rubber or foam, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) foam, neoprene or EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber). During gasket material slitting, straight lines are precisely cut lengthwise directly into a large roll of sheet material that runs through the circular blades (knives) of a roll slitter, in order to create strips of material that are narrower in width. Roll slitter knives are designed specifically for each required job. The three critical determinants of the knives configuration include:

  • The type of material to be slit
  • The specific tolerances that must be held while slitting
  • The work piece material thickness

For those that are familiar with the sheeting and slitting process, they know that the roll slitter knives can be adjusted to make sheet strips of various widths for the gasket fabrication process.
